Tom Downs

Tom Downs leads the diversity recruiting efforts for Military Veterans, Service Members, Military spouses, and people with disabilities at Capital One since 2015. He has advanced the needle in Veteran recruiting by educating recruiters and hiring managers to understand Military resumes, rank, and how that relates to their roles at Capital One. Additionally, Downs has increased Veteran recruiting by developing and executing a concentrated national events strategy to support hiring initiatives. Tom Downs has helped lead efforts for Capital One to be recognized as an employer of choice for Veterans, Military Spouses and People with Disabilities including: “Best for Vets,” “Military Friendly,” “Military Spouse Friendly,” and the “Private Sector Employer of the Year” by Equal Opportunity Publications.

Capital One has partnered with Hiring our Heroes since 2001 and has made it a top priority to hire Veterans and Military spouses. Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) is an initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation that was launched in 2011 as a nationwide effort to connect Veterans, Service Members, and Military spouses with meaningful employment opportunities. To date, they have helped over 30,000 Veterans and Military spouses obtain employment through their events, more than 2,000 companies have committed to hire over 700,000 Veterans and Military spouses as part of their Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign.
